Assoc. Prof. Viktor Mravčík, M.D., Ph.D.

Assoc. Prof. Viktor Mravčík, M.D., Ph.D., the head of the National Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Addiction (NMC). He is responsible for management of the NMC and implementation of the system of monitoring the drug situation and gambling in the Czech Republic.

The NMC is a member of Reitox Network – the European network of national focal points coordinated by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Addiction (EMCDDA). Viktor Mravčík was vice-chair of the Reitox Network from 2004 to 2006. He is the head of NMC since it was established in 2002.

He is involved as an expert in a number of international projects in the field of drug policy and monitoring of the drug situation. He has a rich experience in training colleagues from countries that are preparing their national system to monitor the drug situation according to the EMCDDA standards or deepening their competence in this area. Among other, he initiated creation of an online Reitox Facility Locator.

He is lecturer in methodology and drug epidemiology at the Clinic of Addictology at the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague. He is a research associate of the Czech National Institute of Mental Health. He is a member of doctoral board of doctoral study program in Addictology at the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague. He is a member of the Association of Addictive Diseases of Czech Medical Society since 2010, a member of editorial board of the journal Adiktologie, Prize for the Best Original Work in 2010 of the Journal of the Czech Physicians awarded and the Jaroslav Skala Prize awarded for publishing contribution in the field of addictology in 2017.

He is editor and main author of the Report on Drug Situation and the Report on Gambling in the Czech Republic; the reports are being presented to the Czech Government and EMCDDA annually. He is co-author or editor of more than 150 journal articles or book publications in the field of epidemiology of the substance use and addiction; he is particularly focused on problem drug use and its consequences, including epidemiology gambling and problem gambling.

Among other things, he was a member of the Impact Analysis Project of New Drugs Legislation in the Czech Republic (PAD) narrow research team in 1999-2001, member of the Working Group of the Government and Parliament for the legislative changes for medical cannabis treatment in the Czech Republic in 2011-2013 or the leader of the of the Governmental study on Health and Social Consequences of Gambling in the Czech Republic in 2013-2014.

Between 1993 and 2002 he worked in various positions in the field of health care; most recently as a head of the Epidemiology Centre at Karviná District Institute of Public Health.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Palacký University in Olomouc in 1993. In 1997 he gained first degree attestation in the field of hygiene and epidemiology. In 2000, he gained an additional qualification in the field of epidemiology (Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education, Prague). In 2013, he received Ph.D. in preventive medicine at the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague. In 2018, he was appointed to Associate Professor in the field of hygiene and epidemiology by Rector of Charles University in Prague.
